![]() ![]() So we work really closely together to make sure that whatever final product we come up, we get to meet players expectations and maybe even surpass them. They're all from different disciplines and here at Double Eleven, we especially believe in the mantra of working together as a team, working closely and communication. So regardless if you think back about it, it's not really a one-man show and you really do need it to be a collaborative effort between not just artists, but you need help from coders, musicians, designers and other forms of artists as well. But if you look at it, these creators required resources and the help of other people as well. ![]() As a matter of fact, there are a couple of games that are done by a one-man show. I mean, I'm sure you can make video games by yourself, that's possible. Would you say that video games are the most collaborative and interdisciplinary art form today? It's an incredible form of art that I don't think anything else in our time can compare and it is incredible what we're experiencing this era. There's an entire generation that grew up with these video games, that have the tools to essentially build worlds. Which is I consider personally modern art. Artistry in the sense that, we don't just build the game, but we let the players build them as well. The things that people could do just by giving them the tools alone to build these worlds is incredible, and that in of itself is artistry. With our games like Rust and Minecraft Dungeons, what's really incredible is that we provide the tools for players to actually use to interact with the game. They basically interact and are immersed in these worlds.Įither in single-player or multiplayer, all those experiences will encompass very different situations. If you compare video games to like other media, and we're talking about like images, videos, and music, it's usually a one-way interaction.īut now with video games, a level of interaction between the players and that content itself with the players themselves could actually change the outcomes of whatever they're interacting with in that video game. Why should video games be considered modern art, in your opinion? My team and I are currently working on Rust, Minecraft Dungeons, and Fallout 76. Our games come out on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S. I've been doing mostly PC games but managed to do a couple of consoles as well, and I started off with the PS2 all the way up to the PS4.Īnd now here I am in Double Eleven, which is where we get to work on really modern games right now. My history of game development began all the way back in 2007. I manage them and I support them basically providing resources that they need to actually do their best to come up with the best art that we have here in Double Eleven for all of our partners. So my responsibility essentially involves managing our wonderfully talented concept art team. I'm the Lead Concept Artist here at Double Eleven. What is the history of your gaming career and your role in Double Eleven? To discuss the current landscape of video games and their role as an art form, IGN Southeast Asia spoke to Jeff Mahadi, Lead Concept Artist at Double Eleven Malaysia on his insight as an artist. Through their notable works on games such as Minecraft Dungeons, LittleBigPlanet and more recently, Fallout76, Double Eleven has consistently prioritised both artistic and technical elements in game design.
